Professional criticism is something almost everybody has to deal with. How it is dealt with however, depends on the individual. Many people associate criticism with negativity and many seem to struggle with "not taking it personally". As a designer, you face criticism with every piece you design and it is important to learn early on how to accept it and how to go about dealing with it.
Ahh, such a common question. We hear this a lot when we're working with clients. First of all, we need a little background info to grasp the concept fully, so here it goes:
Talk to most creative agencies and you will often – and passionately – hear, "We will not work on spec". Spec work – or speculative work – is essentially a company opening a contest of sorts to a number of agencies or designers to have them produce work on their behalf with little information or creative brief and with little (often no) compensation for the time spent. The "winner" is then selected and at that point receives payment for the services rendered.
At first glance it may seem like font selection is simply a task of locating one that is pretty, different, fancy or simple enough. But more thought should be given before setting your office memo in comic sans simply because it feels fun.
Websites selling pre-made logos for an incredibly low price are popping up everywhere. This practice not only devalues what we do as graphic designers, but it also robs you, the client.
If your organization has a Facebook page (and if it doesn't, get on it) you've probably been frustrated with the lack of design control when filling in your company's info.
Whether or not we want to admit it, the role of beauty is an important and central part of design. Beauty has the power to influence your target audiences, draw them in and keep them there. But what is beauty in relation to design?
Seems pretty simple doesn’t it? Pretty black and white? Well, the problem with decision making isn’t with the Yes and No aspect of it, it’s the in-between, the gray area, where we start to run into trouble.
