Don't boil the ocean

In speaking with several companies and people, some who are using the tools of social media and others who are considering using the tools, I often run into the same issue: the desire to use as many of the tools as possible, or no consideration where their audience might be found. There tends to be two sides to this issue: 1) those who feel that ALL the tools will help them win the audience race and 2) those who feel that putting the tools in place is their new marketing strategy to reach audiences.

More than just a name

We recently had the opportunity to brand a new product for one of our clients. This involved developing a unique, but meaningful name for the high-tech device as well as a logo and slogan. Most people would think that the logo would be the tricky part, after all a name is just a name, right?

What’s your signal-to-noise ratio?

There is a term called signal-to-noise ratio, used in science and engineering to measure how much a signal has been degraded by noise. It’s a good term to use when assessing our communication strategies too.

When should I send out my eNewsletter?

Having multiple touches with your customers is key, and what better way to do it than with an eNewsletter. An email newsletter can be a very effective and inexpensive marketing tool that any business can use to promote a new product or service, communicate to your customers. The hard part of running a successful email newsletter campaign is that it is a science, and getting all of the variables right is more difficult than you might think. Most particularly, timing is key but often difficult to determine.

Are you speaking to the Net-Gens? Let me translate...

During my studies at Trent University I had the opportunity to attend a fantastic presentation by Don Tapscott on his new book Grown Up Digital. It is a must read if you really want to understand our generation (and you should because we are the future). Whether you’re looking to sell your product, promote your cause, or hire new talent – you need to understand a few things about us Net-Genners.

Keywords: How am I going to find you if I can’t find you?

If there was ever a time to consider focusing on social media and search engine optimization (SEO) it’s now, as we approach last few days before the holiday season and people are frantically looking for those last-minute gifts, or last-minute services before the big ‘to-do’: consumers and businesses are looking for you.

Footsteps to Follow

In my last blog I explained the importance of IMC. To recap, the notion of building loyalty and consumer trust is becoming more important than the traditional view of reaching a million people.

Social Media: what’s the plan?

Time and time again, I keep bumping into people and companies who have a few or several SoMe accounts and can’t figure out why they don’t have a strong following.

FBML... Not just another pretty "Facebook"

If your organization has a Facebook page (and if it doesn't, get on it) you've probably been frustrated with the lack of design control when filling in your company's info.

Avoid Lemming Mentality: Don’t end up at the bottom of the SoMe cliff

When is the last time you can honestly say that you took a long hard look at your communications strategy and results before committing to a new idea or trend? And I mean seriously looked. Not just glanced over.
